Good morning!
Welcome to week two of the first annual Ray J's Review's "Family-Friendly Freaky Fridays" review series🎬🎃👻💚🧡💜 This week I am reviewing the 1993 made for TV film "Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble" starring the Olsen Twins, Mary Kate & Ashley.
The twins play Kelly (Mary Kate Olsen), and Lynn (Ashley Olsen), whose parents are having some pretty bad financial troubles, and could unfortunately lose their home if they don't find some help quickly! After picking up the twins from a halloween party, their Mom & Dad, (played by Kelli Fox, and Eric McCormick) inform them that they need to make a stop before they go home. They make a visit to the creepy home of their Mom's Aunt Agatha (played by Cloris Leachman) in hopes of asking for a loan to help with the finances until Dad gets back on his feet with work. The twins discover from a grave digger that they meet while their parent's are inside, that Agatha is actually a nasty, but rich, witch, and has a twin sister of her own that she trapped in a mirror using the powers of a moonstone. Now knowing about the money troubles at hand, Kelly, and Lynn decide to sneak away from their parents on halloween night while trick or treating...that way they can take things into their own hands, and maybe, just maybe find a way to break the spell, and rescue Sophia. They need to hurry though, because at the strike of midnight on halloween, the spell will become permanent, and Sophia will not be able to escape from the mirror😬
I haven't seen this movie in many, MANY years😂 This movie came out when I was two years old, and I do remember seeing it multiple times as a kid. Having now watched it again as a 30 year old, it's a pretty average made for TV halloween film, but it did make me feel nostalgic, and I think that it's a decent one for kids to enjoy!
I will say that there are some things that happen in this movie that I thought could be inappropriate for the younger age group, or things that the twins did that could potentially be dangerous lessons. For instance: talking to strangers. There are two instances in the movie where Kelly and Lynn are alone and speak to someone they don't know, once where they are left in the car alone, and then leave the car to go talk to the grave digger, and then when they sneak away from their parents on halloween night while trick or treating (also a dangerous lesson), they find a homeless man that they befriend to help them. Of course the characters in the end mean no harm, however the homeless man, Mr. N (played by Meshach Taylor) at one point does try to betray the twins by asking for money from the Agatha in exchange for turning them in. Mind you the twins are seven years old in this film.
Consensus: "Double, Double, Toil, and Trouble" is a cute & nostalgic Halloween movie to watch with the kids, but for the adults it will most likely come off as extremely average🙂🤷♂️
