Surprise! In preparation of the remake which premieres tonight on Disney Channel, here is a second helping of Family-Friendly Freaky Fridays with my review of the first ever "Disney Channel Original Movie", "Under Wraps"😄🎬🎃👻💚 I was six years old when this made for TV movie originally aired, and of course I remember thinking it was fun at the time😄 Having just rewatched it after so many years, what do I think of It now? Keep reading, and you'll find out soon enough🤔
The film centers around three best friend middle school aged kids, all with three very different personalities. You have Marshall (played by Mario Yedidia), a brave soul and lover of all things horror, Gilbert (played by Adam Wylie) a smart cookie, but the wimp of the group, and Amy (played by Clara Bryant) a snarky young lady, with a heart as brave as Marshall's. One night they dare each other to sneak inside a super creepy local house where a man named Mr. Kubat has just died. While inside they come across an Egyptian mummy, and while they are absolutely terrified at first, I mean who wouldn't be, they come to realize that the mummy is harmless, and is not going to hurt them. They decide that the mummy needs to be hidden, so they sneak him back to Marshall's house where he hides perfectly among all of the monster movie statues, and decorations he has in his room. The kids eventually start to find the mummy to be kinda fun to hang out with, and they nickname him Harold (Under all the wrapping, Harold is played by Bill Fagerbakke, who also voices Patrick Star on Spongebob Squarepants). Thanks to the help of a local store owner, Bruce (played by Ken Campbell), the kids come to find out that Harold needs to be returned to his Sarcophagus, by midnight on Halloween night, or else he will cease to exist. Unfortunately Harold's sarcophagus along with the rest of Mr. Kubat's belongings have been already moved, and now the kids must find the sarcophagus and the mysterious group of movers before it's too late!
I will say, while this movie made me feel nostalgic viewing it again, and it's is pretty fun at times, for the most part I found it to be a bit dragging (no pun intended)...especially for the first forty five minutes or so. It's not super exciting, or intriguing as some Disney Channel Original movies have come to be in today's day and age, but it's a fine and silly time.
The characters are a little on the meh side, but I did enjoy some of their personalities🙂
In my opinion, Marshall is the best character. I also enjoyed Amy, and her snarky self, but sometimes the snark was a bit much, and came off as annoying.
I'm interested to see how the remake will compare to the 1997 original, and if it any more fun will be added. Make sure to check back tomorrow for my review of the 2021 remake of "Under Wraps"🎬👻🎃
All in all, this film is a mostly enjoyable time, even if it tends to drag a bit in first half!
