I usually enjoy most Disney Channel Original Movies, (the musicals, such as Descendants, High School Musical, Zombies, always tend to be my favorite), however there are some non musical DCOM's that I have enjoyed as well over the recent years (such as Upside Down Magic, and Cloud 9).
The newest DCOM "Spin" is quite special, and to be honest might just be not only one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies ever, but also one that is executed to perfection emotionally and in a satisfying way! While not a musical, the topic of music is featured heavily in the film .
"Spin" centers around an american-indian teen named Rhea (played by Avantika Vandanapu), who works most of her nights at her family's popular indian restaurant, "Taste of India". While Rhea really does enjoy working with her family at the restaurant, she wants to find a passion of her own to explore, but doesn't want to upset her father. Inheriting an ear for music from her late mother, who sadly passed away when she was eight, one of Rhea's favorite things to do is create playlists of feel good songs each night, and she plays them to get her through the dinner rush. She soon puts that passion into action when she gets to know a boy from her school, Max (played by Michael Bishop) who is an aspiring DJ. With some help from Max, she soon learns that she also has an ear for creating incredible beats, and blending in sounds from the real world.
I absolutely loved this movie💚 The acting was never cringe worthy, except for one character, Ginger (played by Kerri Medders), Rhea's friend who is an influencer…she was just a bit annoying at times.
The emotional qualities were executed fantastically, and there were also some really nice visuals and cinematography!
There were many aspects of this film that I thought were perfect, such as how characters acted! There is a parent-teacher conference scene between Rhea's father, and her teacher at school, and the discussion just felt so natural. Even the scenes with Rhea and her father, when they disagreed on something, or he needed her to work at the restaurant, there was no argument...they talked it out. The characters were all so pleasant! Rhea's Nani/Grandmother (played by Meera Syal) was my favorite!
"IT'S ALL MUSIC" The soundtrack of "Spin" is also so refreshing for a Disney Channel movie, and incredibly authentic🎧
While I'm not sure "Spin" will completely hold the younger kiddo's attention, the film is a high quality step for Disney Channel, and I think that tweens, teenagers, and older folks will enjoy it the most! I can't get over how normal of a movie this felt for Disney Channel...so good!
You should be 🎶Feeling Good Now🎶 because "Spin" is absolutely worth your time!!
