Good afternoon everyone🙂🎬 Here is a new mini-review for you all of the musical/kids film "Honey Girls".
"Honey Girls" follows a trio of young aspiring musicians, Charlie (played by Ava Grace), Maya (played by Aliyah Martin), and Alex (played by Frankie McNellis). Along with a group of other young girls, they are selected to compete in a talent competition consisting of various challenges. The prize: to become the next global solo star, under the mentor supervision of superstar, Fancy G (played by Ashanti). As the competition heats up, challenges of dancing, songwriting, social media, and more play out... Charlie, Maya, and Alex begin to form an unforgettable bond which soon brings to light the revelation that their unique talents blend better together!
To be honest, this movie is a bit too simple, and definitely has that direct to home video/TV movie vibe, but on the other hand it's a brisk watch that I think older kids (especially girls) will most likely enjoy, at least once!
The film features some decent messages in regards to fame for the younger crowd. It was nice that even though all of the girls were competing with one another, every time someone was cut, it was done in an uplifting way. For example, one of the challenges was fashion, and the girl who was cut (who you could tell was not comfortable in the outfit she chose for the runway) was uplifted with some inspiration about fashion embodiment. I thought it was a very nice message, that you can still make yourself look presentable, without wearing clothes that are uncomfortable or don't suit you.
As far as the music...it's alright, and pretty much what you'd expect from this kind of movie. In my opinion, the stand out songs are "Diamonds" (the opening song, performed by Ashanti as Fancy G), and "What We've Been Looking For" (the song that makes the "Honey Girls" go viral).
Consensus: While "Honey Girls" could use some extra filling, it boasts some well stated (fame-related) messages for pre-teens to swallow, and could suffice as a brisk distraction at sleepovers🐻✨🐻✨🐻✨
