Are you ready to SCREAM? For the fifth time? Ghost Face is back in "Scream" (the fifth film in the franchise, with the same title as the first), and whoever is behind the mask this time is after those who have a connection to the murders from the past😱😳🔪
*THIS IS A Semi-SPOILER FREE REVIEW*
"Scream" (2022) follows a young woman named Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera), who is informed that her sister Tara (played fantastically by the talented Jenna Ortega) is in serious condition, after being brutally attacked by someone in a Ghost Face costume. Returning to her hometown of Woodsboro, CA with her boyfriend Richie (played by Jack Quaid), Sam meets Tara's friend's, Amber (played by Mikey Madison), Wes, (played by Dylan Minnette), Liv (played by Sonia Ben Ammar), Chad, (played by Mason Gooding), and Mindy (played by Jasmin Savoy-Brown) at the hospital to visit her sister. What everyone doesn't know is that Sam is keeping an extremely dark secret, that could be a clue as to why the new Ghost Face killer attacked Tara. Of course this time around, Mindy, and also Sam's boyfriend Richie are the horror movie buff's of the group...knowing the history of Woodsboro, and having seen the "Stab" movies dozens of times (there are 8 of them now, and apparently the 8th is the worst one😂) they offer up some friendly advice that the killer is most likely going to come after anyone who is close to Tara, while also taking in to account that the killer may want to shake things up🤷♂️ With that being said, let's just say they decide to consult in the experts😉
While I felt like it was a tad bid slow in the beginning, "Scream" (2022) eventually delivers, and proves that this franchise still has some stabbing left in it🔪😂 One thing I think audiences may be surprised by is that Neve Campbell's (Sidney Prescott), and even Courtney Cox's (Gale Weathers) are featured way less than you would expect, but that doesn't take away from it being another super fun sequel!
I rewatched the first "Scream", and "Scream 4", after hearing that this fifth installment would have some strong connections to both films, and I would say it has more of a connection to the first than it does to the fourth. As far as the killer reveal, I don't think it was as shocking as the reveal in "Scream 4". Emma Roberts should have won an Oscar for that performance...I said what I said🤷♂️🔪
Acting performances were pretty great this time around, and I have to give the main props to Jenna Ortega (as Tara) who is truly proving herself to be one of today's brightest rising stars. I thought David Arquette was especially well used this time around as Dewey, and was another stand out for me🙂
Also, the meta comedy here is top notch! With references of elevated horror (Hereditary, The Witch, The Babadook), being apart of the opening sequence, and Ghost Face losing his s**t over the phone😂🤣😂 There is even an instance where they poke fun at the title not being "Scream 5"...I mean come on, how can you not appreciate that😂
Overall, "Scream" (2022) is another worthy sequel that fans should have a fun time with😄🔪🎬 While I think the killer reveal could have been better, Jenna Ortega, and David Arquette's performances shine through the bloodshed🌟🌟
