Good afternoon too all of my fellow movie lovers!! For this week's review in "Spring Animation Awakening" movie review series I am taking a looking at 2015's "Strange Magic"🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️. An animated musical film by George Lucas, who is famously know for creating the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises!

The film, loosely inspired by William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night' Dream", and revolves around two sisters, fairies, Marianne (voice by Evan Rachel Wood) who is about to tie the knot with her fiancé, Roland (voiced by Sam Palladio), and Dawn (voiced by Meridith Anne Bull), who seems to fall in love with every boy she makes eye contact with. It's a gorgeous spring day, a wedding day to be exact, and Marianne is buzzing through the flower fields while singing her heart out to Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling In Love". That is until she see's her heroically toxic fiancé, Roland cheating on her with another fairy! Marianne, emotions all in an uproar, declares she'll never fall in love again!! Thanks to some sisterly help, Dawn is able to cheer up Marianne just enough for her to attend the "Spring Ball" where she goes AWF on Roland, in the form of a Kelly Clarkson hit, whilst Roland tries to win her back at the same time. Roland wants Marianne back, whatever it takes, so he enlists a young elf named Sunny (voiced by Elijah Kelly) - who has a huge crush on Dawn - to go into the dark forest to retrieve a powerful love potion. Long story short (no pun intended), Sunny is successful in his love potion quest, thanks to some help from the Sugar Plum Fairy (voiced by Kristen Chenoweth), but not for long as the sinister Bog King (voiced by Alan Cumming) - who also has no time for love - makes an appearance at the outside celebration of the Spring Ball, and ends up kidnapping Dawn, but not before she is accidentally doused with the love potion. Now, Marianne must go rescue her sister from the bog king, who she just so happens to also now be falling in love with....(awkward)😬

I'll admit, I've only really seen "Strange Magic" in bits and pieces prior to today. While it's faaar from perfect, in my opinion it's not the disaster that critics have made it out to be!

It's not anything special either, but I don't think it's bad or boring by any means. The humor, isn't great, and the music is a bit old school, so I'm not sure kids will exactly enjoy that department of it, however parents/adults born circa 1960's/70's might appreciate🙂🎶 Most of the songs are sung pretty well!

The movie features some nice messages in regards to not falling in love with appearances, but rather the personality or kindness of someone. It isn't anything that hasn't been said multiple times before, but always an important message to be told!

Consensus: Don't let critics fool you! There are far worse movies you could find for your kids to watch than "Strange Magic". A fairly average fairy tale flick, but an enjoyably fairly average fairy tale flick🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️
