Good morning everyone, and welcome to the first review in my "Thankful For Movie Musicals" annual film review seriesšš¬š¶ I've said it may times before, and I'll say it again, if you know me, you know musicals are one of my favorite types of filmsš¶š¤ This week, I am checking out the 1986 black comedy-musical "Little Shop Of Horrors" for the first time! An overall delightful, yet WTF did I just watch movie musicalš
The film takes place in the early 1960's...you have a gentleman named Seymour (played by Rick Moranis), who works day to day, along with his colleague Audrey (played by Ellen Greene) at Mr. Mushniks flower shop, where business is currently quite dry. Due to the drought of incoming money, Mr. Mushnik (played by Vincent Gardenia) threatens to close his shop, but Seymour may have discovered the "plant" that will draw in the customers, and their attention! After putting this mysterious/unknown plant in the shop window, customers are intrigued, and begin to pour in! Alas, business at Mr. Mushnik's is once again booming! Just one thing...of course this plant needs to be fed, but to Seymour's surprise it doesn't scarf down what all the other plants are eating...nope! This little guy, which Seymour has named Audrey II (yes, after his colleague Audrey, and she is shockingly flattered), needs blood to thriveš³ Caught up in in curiosity, Seymour continues to feed Audrey II drops of blood from his fingers, but as the plant continues to grow, that just ends up not being enough anymore! In the meantime, sweet, but naive Audrey is dealing with an abusive boyfriend, Orin (played by Steve Martin), also an obnoxious dentist, who gets what he has coming to him....and you can see where this is headingšš©ø Seymour needs to figure how to continue to keep up the act of secretly feeding the plant what it needs without getting caught so the flower shop can keep thriving, or decide to do the right thing, and destroy Audrey II once and for all!
Surprisingly, I've never seen "Little Shop of Horrors" before! However I have heard a couple of the songs, such as the main theme of the same title and the duet between Seymour, and Audrey "Suddenly Seymour"š¶š
"Little Shop Of Horrors" is an overall delightful, albeit a super strange & over the top, musical film! I wasn't super crazy about some of the performances in this movie, in particular Steve Martin's. Thank goodness his character wasn't in it for long! However, I really enjoyed Ellen Greene as Audrey! Such a sweet characterāŗļø I wouldn't say this is one of my favorite musicals that I've ever watched, but I am glad that I checked it out for the first time ever!
I will admit the songs are quite enjoyable, and funš¶š Some of the standouts for me are, the opening number "Little Shop Of Horrors", "Skid Row (Downtown)", "Feed Me (Git It)", "Suddenly Seymour", and "Mean Green Mother From Outer Space"š¶š
Consensus: "Little Shop Of Horrors" is an easy watch for musical lovers, clocking in at just a little under one hour and a halfšš¬š¶ Non-musical loving folks could find it corny, or annoying, but those who enjoy the genre should appreciate it's delightfully campy tone, and amusing songs!
