Good morning, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone🙏 Welcome to the final review in my "Thankful for Movie Musicals" film review series until next November🙂 Today I am revisiting a film that I'm sure many of you have seen...one of my personal favorites, "The Greatest Showman
"😄💚🎶🎪🎩🎬
A film that is obviously a fantasy style musical, loosely based on the life of P.T Barnum. It is such an easy watch, and I can't even remember how many times I saw it in the movie theater..
ALOT😁
The film begins with an energetic roar literally, and figuratively....letting you know "THIS IS THE GREATEST SHOW"! As a young boy, P.T Barnum works with his father for a snooty family, The Hallets (although smitten with their daughter, Charity), and always fantasizes about having a more fantastical life! When Charity is sent off to finishing school, tragedy strikes, and Barnum makes a promise to himself that he will do whatever it takes to be able to provide a life full of wonder for her when they are eventually reunited as adults. Charity (older version played by Michelle Williams), and Barnum venture off to New York City, where they marry, and have two daughters, Caroline (played by Austyn Johnson), and Helen (played by Cameron Seely). Though Charity is content, and happy with where their lives are at right now, Barnum still yearns for more! After losing his current job, he decides to deceptively take out a loan, and open A Barnum Museum, filled with multiple wax figures. *Shocker*, tickets to the museum do not sell very well, so his daughters suggest switching it up with adding something that is "Alive". Barnum puts up flyers for peculiar acts and goes searching for "freaks", in which he discovers the bearded lady, Lettie (played fantastically by Keala Settle), acrobat siblings Anne Wheeler (also played fantastically by Zendaya), and WD Wheeler (played Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) + more. After a successful first show, and renaming to "Barnum's Circus", ticket sales and attendance begin to spike, so Barnum brings on some help, recruiting playwright, Phillip Carlyle (played by Zac Efron). Everything seems to be going so well for Barnum, but it still seems as if it's "Never Enough" (see what I did there🎶), and soon he starts to lose sight of what's important, and if enough isn't enough, well then everything he has built could soon come crumbling down😕
I don't think there are many people out there who dislike this movie😂 I mean how could you? The music is absolutely phenomenal, and the film itself is energetic + the definition of family entertainment🎬💚
There are plenty of great performances throughout, but for me the standouts are by far: Zendaya (as Anne Wheeler), Rebecca Ferguson (as Jenny Lind), Michelle Williams (as Charity Hallett), and Hugh Jackman (as P.T Barnum)👏👏
Now, in case you didn't know, the soundtrack to this movie was an absolute smash on the charts, and it so deserves the praise🎶🔥 The music exudes so much energy, and emotion...by far my favorite film soundtrack of the past decade! While there truly isn't a skippable song, my personal favorites (in order that I like them) are: "Rewrite The Stars", "Come Alive", "The Greatest Show", "This Is Me", "Never Enough, and "A Million Dreams"💚
Consensus: "The Greatest Showman" is my comfort movie🎬🎪🎩🎶💚 A simple, feel good film, bursting with energy, spectacular music and is just super easy to digest🙂
🎶It's everything you ever want🎶
🎶It's everything you ever need🎶
